GRAPE TO GLASS
It’s estimated that almost half of a wine bottle’s carbon footprint comes from the production and mishandling of packaging. With that in mind, we continue to make improvements to create a more efficient, eco-friendly system.
WHAT’S IN THE BOX?
Excess waste really bums us out, which is why we designed our shipping boxes to be as compact as possible, while still protecting the Wonders inside. After more than a dozen iterations, we created one of the most efficient wine shippers in the industry. Our boxes are made from 70% recycled material and are 100% recyclable and 95% compostable.
Most wine capsules are made from polylaminate, a three-layer stack of polyethylene inside aluminum. Aluminum is easily recyclable, but extracting it from the polyethylene is incredibly difficult, so many recycling centers can’t or won’t recycle them — meaning they accumulate as plastic waste.
With our first production of Wonderful Wine alone, we have prevented 16,000 feet of capsules (the equivalent of 50 football fields) from ending up in a landfill.
We checked our egos at the door and with it those fancy, heavy Napa bottles. Our lightweight glass requires 20% less energy and 12% percent less water to produce. Throughout production and transport, using lightweight glass bottles has reduced our carbon emissions by approximately 26% overall.
As tree-huggers and bona fide cork dorks, choosing an eco-friendly and sustainable option was a no-brainer. Our natural corks are 100% renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable. No trees harmed here.
Ensuring wine is delivered as safely (and sustainably) as possible is no easy feat, but we love a challenge. By shipping our wine in flexitanks and bottling closer to the point of sale, we can ship more than twice as much wine per container, reducing our CO2 emissions by 40% versus standard shipping methods. This also minimizes the distance a product travels in its packaged form, thereby minimizing damage and waste.
When we transfer our wines across the country, we don’t use reefers, which are refrigerated trucks that emit CO2 and increase the demand for fuel. We opt for insulated blankets instead.
